Island Peak Climbing.
Island peak climbing is an enormously popular trekking peak for climbing in Nepal. The approach trek to the peak is through beuatiful Gokyo valley .With a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu, we follow the Dudh Koshi river valley, acclimatise on day in the Sherpa town of Namche Bazzar and head for the pristine Gokyo lake. We enjoy the climb to famous Gokyo Ri which commands one of the finest views of Everest , Cho Oyu and other mountains, cross the Cho La pass, enjoy yet another grand view, and descend to Dingboche. From Dingboche we start the preparation for our Island peak climbing. An alternative and equally popular approach is first visiting Everest base camp or the Kalapattar and trekking back to Dingboche. With Everest base camp and Island peak climbing combined, it is one of the most enjoyable adventure tour imaginable.
Island peak, 6189m , is actually an extension of Lhotse Shar, and is located between the Lhotse and Imja glaciers. We attempt along the standard route. Though the summit can be reached on a single day we make use of a high camp on its south west ridge to ensure the success. The climb involves one steep and exposed 100 m ice climb, otherwise it is a non technical snow climb. The climb also offers fabulous view of the Khumbu region and the Chhukung valley. From the summit you can enjoy the huge south face of Lhotse and the peak of Amadablam. |
